Great Performances at Vanderbilt will host jazz phenomenon and piano virtuoso Alfredo Rodríguez at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in Langford Auditorium.

The Cuban-born Rodríguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana and is known to call up images of legendary jazz pianists such as Keith Jarrett, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum and his compatriot Chucho Valdés.

Discovered by legendary producer Quincy Jones at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Rodríguez’s artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as by his Cuban and jazz roots. “He is without a doubt one of the best young pianists I’ve ever seen,” Jones has said. “With the enormous skills he already possesses, his potential is limitless.”

Rodríguez will perform in a trio with Francisco Mela on drums and Peter Slavov on bass. Tickets for the performance are on sale now at the Sarratt Student Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster telecharge at (615) 255-9600, or online.

Single ticket prices are $40, $35 or $30 for individuals, $18 for VU faculty and staff, $10 for all area students/children with a valid ID, and $5 for VU students.
