Vanderbilt students will participate in more than 50 service projects in the Nashville community during their second annual 9/11 Weekend of Service.

The students will perform community service throughout the weekend of Sept. 9, 10 and 11, ranging from working in community gardens and educational and team-building activities with school children to helping the homeless and post-flood park restoration.

Vanderbilt’s Office of Active Citizenship and Service is sponsoring the service projects in conjunction with Vanderbilt student service groups, residential houses and other campus programs. The number of service projects offered this year has nearly doubled from last year.

The students’ efforts are in keeping with The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance established in 2009 by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. This year, more than a million Americans are expected to serve in their communities to honor the sacrifice of those who were lost on 9/11 and pay tribute to those who rose in service in response to the tragedy.
