April grants announced by Division of Sponsored Research

The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in April that the following grants in excess of $25,000 had been awarded:

Theodore A. Bapty, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $311,047 by the Department of Defense for “Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE).” Abhishek Dubey, Sandeep K. Neema and Jason M. Scott are co-principal investigators.

Bharat L. Bhuva, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $70,000 by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation for “Logic Designs for In-Field Repair and Failure Mitigation.”

Dietmar H. Bisch, Mathematics, has received an award in the amount of $70,449 by the National Science Foundation for “Subfactors, Bimodules and Planar Algebras.”

Charles A. Brau, Physics and Astronomy, has received an award in the amount of $200,000 by the Department of Defense for “High Brightness Cathodes for High-power Free-electron Lasers.” Jim L. Davidson, Weng Poo Kang and Bo-kyoung Choi are co-principal investigators.

Edward F. Fischer, Latin American Studies, has received an award in the amount of $250,500 by the Department of Education for “Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships.”

Katherine L. Friedman, Biological Sciences, has received an award in the amount of $263,280 by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for “Cell Cycle Regulation of Yeast Telomerase Assembly and Function.”

Todd D. Giorgio, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $205,985 by the Department of Defense for “Assessment of Nanobiotechnology-Targeted siRNA Designed to Inhibit NF-kappaB Classical and Alternative Signaling in Breast Tumor Macrophages.” Craig L. Duvall is co-principal investigator.

Michael Goldfarb, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $163,958 by the Department of Defense for “Development of a Neural Interface for Control of Powered Lower Limb Prostheses.”

Scott A. Guelcher, Chemical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $50,000 by the National Science Foundation for “CAREER: Bioactive Weight-bearing Bone/Polymer Composites.”

Carolyn Hughes, Special Education, has received an award in the amount of $399,685 by the Department of Education for “Development and Validation of the Supports Intensity Scale for Children.”

E. Duco Jansen, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $126,712 by the Department of Defense for “Neurophotonics Research Center.” Anita Mahadevan-Jansen is co-principal investigator.

Will E. Johns, Physics and Astronomy, has received an award in the amount of $133,560 by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for “US CMS Forward Pixels M & O Subsystem.”

Ann P. Kaiser, Special Education, has received an award in the amount of $241,101 by the Autism Speaks Foundation for “Autism Speaks.” Maria Alexandra Da Fonte and Terry B. Hancock are co-principal investigators.

Gabor Karsai, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $25,061 by the Department of Defense for “Next Generation C2 Wing Tunnel for COA Simulation.”

David E. Lewis, Political Science, has received an award in the amount of $69,662 by the National Science Foundation for “Collaborative: Politicization, Bureaucratic Expertise and Agency Performance.”

Clare M. McCabe, Chemical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $180,308 by the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin for “Using Molecular Modeling to Determine Structure and Organization in Skin Lipids.” Dr. McCabe also received an award in the amount of $92,916 by the National Science Foundation for “Developing a Molecularly Detailed Theoretical Framework for Predicting the Thermodynamic Properties of Ionic Liquids.”

David E. McCauley, Biological Sciences, has received an award in the amount of $115,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Collaborative Research: Paternal Transmission and Recombination of the Mitochondrial Genome in the Plant Genus Silene.”

Jonathan M. Metzl, Sociology, has received an award in the amount of $112,482 by the National Science Foundation for “Protest Psychosis: Science, Race and the Stigma of Schizophrenia.”

Olubunmi O. Olatunji, Psychology, has received an award in the amount of $26,444 by the National Institute on Mental Health for “Disgust Sensitivity and Visual Processing of Contamination in OCD – Fellowship for Thomas R. Armstrong.”

Robert W. Pitz, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $67,740 by MetroLaser, Incorporated for “Hydroxyl Tagging Velocimetry System for Rocket Exhausts.”

Robert A. Reed, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $135,000 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for “Investigation of Radiation Effects in Advanced Electronic Devices.” Jeffrey D. Black, Marcus H. Mendenhall, Ronald D. Schrimpf and Robert A. Weller are co-principal investigators.

Jeffrey D. Schall, Psychology, has received an award in the amount of $310,838 by the National Institute on Mental Health for “Neural Control of Voluntary Movement.”

Ronald D. Schrimpf, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $364,875 by the Department of Defense for “Technical, Analytical and Program Services to Support Current and Future SLBM Guidance Requirements.” Lloyd W. Massengill, Robert A. Weller, Robert A. Reed and William T. Holman are co-principal investigators.

Marybeth Shinn, Human and Organizational Development, has received an award in the amount of $60,000 by the Government of Canada/Medical Research Council for “SHHRC Doctoral Fellowship – Craven.”

Jason G. Valentine, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $86,437 by the Department of Defense for “Low-loss Optical Metamaterials Based on Mie Resonances in Semiconductor Nanoparticle Composites.”

D. Mitchell Wilkes, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $87,811 by the Department of Defense for “Speech Data and Preparation Data – Analyze Speech Patterns Correlated to Depression and Suicide Risk.”

Shu-Yu Wu, Biological Sciences, has received an award in the amount of $52,154 by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for “Constructing Gene Regulatory Networks for Asymmetric Brain Development.” Joshua T. Gamse is co-principal investigator.

Guoliang Yu, Mathematics, has received an award in the amount of $163,933 by the National Science Foundation for “Operator K-theory and its Applications to Geometry and Topology.”
