Songs for Sound will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 6 to 10 p.m., at 3RD aVenue South ( 120 Third Ave South). Featuring songwriters Neil Thrasher, Jason Sellers, Wendell Mobley, Andrew Pates, Jay Clementi and Tiffany Johnson, this night of music will raise money for children with hearing disabilities. Part of the proceeds will go to the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication at the Bill Wilkerson Center at Vanderbilt.
Almost two years ago, Jaime Vernon, a data manager for The Vanderbilt Fund, watched as her daughter Alexis “Lexi” Vernon heard sound for the first time, thanks to cochlear implants. At the tender age of 19 months, Lexi went from a silent world to hearing her mommy whisper “I love you, baby girl.”
“There are 1.2 million severe to profoundly deaf people who do not have cochlear implants, but could benefit from them,” Vernon said. “Songs for Sound, along with Lexi’s testimony, can advocate on behalf of those individuals who simply don’t know about these miracle ears, or don’t have the means to receive them. Lexi’s story was given to us to tell the world about her miracle ears, so all deaf children can have a chance at a normal hearing life and a mainstream life including using spoken language.”
Songs for Sound is a Nashville-based charity whose core mission is to improve the quality of life for profoundly deaf children worldwide by providing resources to give them the chance at a mainstream life. Songs for Sound will inform the deaf community and provide resources for cochlear implants and rehabilitation, including speech/audiology services, to children in need regardless of race, religion or any other critieria. Songs for Sound is a partner of Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, the flagship program.

Because of Lexi’s miraculous recovery after receiving her cochlear implants, we have created the organization, Songs for Sound, to tell all severe to profoundly deaf children and their families of these miracle ears, cochlear implants.
