Dyer Observatory to host ’Opera on the Mountain’ May 15

Nashville Opera and Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory are joining forces to present a unique evening of operatic music and star-gazing on Saturday, May 15. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. but doors will open at 6. The concert will take place in the observatory’s patio tent and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and beverages.

Artists scheduled to perform include pianist Jennifer McGuire, mezzo soprano Jennifer Coleman, soprano Mary Scheib and baritone Jonathan Carle who will present selections from Susannah, I Puritani, The Mikado, Rusalka, Franz Schubert and others. Stuart Holt, education director for Nashville Opera, will serve as the concert’s master of ceremonies.

After the concert, visitors can linger to stargaze using the observatory’s Seyfert telescope. The concert will take place rain or shine.

Reserved seating is $20 and patron tickets are priced at $100. Tickets may be purchased online at www.nashvilleopera.org or by calling Nashville Opera at (615) 832-5242. Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be available the day of the concert.

Celebrating its 30th season, Nashville Opera is one of the most successful regional companies in the United States. Since staging its first performance in 1981, the company now reaches more than 30,000 Middle Tennessee students annually through its extensive education and outreach touring programs.

Built in 1953, Dyer Observatory was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The property consists of the observatory, 1953 house and garage and 2006 Star Chamber. The observatory serves as a community resource for the teaching of science as well as a venue for public, private and corporate events.
