Political historian of modern conservatism to lecture on Obama presidency

Rick Perlstein, an author and political journalist who has written extensively about the history of conservatism in modern America, will speak at Vanderbilt University on March 22.

Perlstein’s talk, “Whatever Happened to Hope: Why Barack Obama Cannot Become a Transformational President,” will be at 4:10 p.m. in Stevenson Center, Room 4327.

Video of the talk will be available at www.vanderbilt.edu/News after the event.

His books include Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus (2001) and Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America (2008). His lecture at Vanderbilt will be drawn from a third historical volume he is writing that focuses on the rise of Ronald Reagan.

Perlstein, who earned his bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Chicago, has written for The Village Voice and The New Republic. He previously was a blogger for the Campaign for America’s Future, a progressive political organization that describes itself as “the strategy center for the progressive movement.”

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by Vanderbilt’s Departments of History and Political Science and Vanderbilt Student Government. For more information, call 615-322-6323.
