The student-run Vanderbilt Initiative for Vegetarian Awareness will join several other student organizations to host a screening of the documentary Food Inc. Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Cinema, located at 2301 Vanderbilt Place.
Food Inc. examines the American commercial food industry and includes interviews with such experts as co-producer Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation; Michael Pollan; author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto; Gary Hirshberg, chairman, president and “CE-Yo” of Stonyfield Farm, the world’s leading organic yogurt producer; and Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface, a family-owned, multi-generational, pasture-based, beyond organic, local-market farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
A panel discussion will follow the screening, featuring representatives from Vanderbilt’s Sustainability and Environmental Management Office, Nashville Urban Harvest, the Traveling Vegetarian television program and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A reception will be held in the lobby after the discussion.
The screening, discussion and reception are free and open to the public.
