Documentary about L.A. punk music to open Vanderbilt film series

A documentary about the 1980s punk music scene in Los Angeles will begin the Vanderbilt University portion of the 2009-2010 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.

Let Them Know: The Story of Youth Brigade and BYO Records will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in Sarratt Cinema on the Vanderbilt campus. Director Jeff Alulis will attend the screening and answer questions afterward. He’ll also speak to Vanderbilt’s History of Rock Music class from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., also in Sarratt Cinema. The public is invited to the class.

All the Vanderbilt Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers films are free and open to the public and will feature question and answer sessions with the filmmakers.

The Southern Circuit program provides communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. The tour connects audience members with independent filmmakers and encourages dialogue about film. The screenings are funded in part by a grant from the Southern Arts Federation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Office of the Dean of Students at Vanderbilt and the International Lens Film Program at Vanderbilt.

Austin Peay State University is also participating in the Southern Circuit Tour. Their first screening is 2 p.m. Sept. 12th in the Customs House Museum auditorium featuring the film Dare Not Walk Alone with producer/director Jeremy Dean. The Customs House Museum is at 200 South Second Street in downtown Clarksville.

All the Vanderbilt films will be shown at 7 p.m. at Sarratt.

The rest of the schedule:

Oct. 19: The Way We Get By, about the lives of senior citizens who greet American soldiers departing for and returning from Iraq.

Nov. 12: Flying on One Engine, a documentary about Dr. Sharadkumar Dicksheet, who periodically travels to India to perform free operations for poor people despite severe health problems.

Feb. 11: TRIMPIN: The Sound of Invention, a documentary about MacArthur Genius Award winner Trimpin (who uses only his last name), a wildly creative artist-inventor-composer-engineer.

March 18: God’s Architects, a documentary about five visionary builders and their enigmatic creations.

April 8: Between Floors, which examines the human condition by intercutting between five stuck elevators and the people trapped inside them.
