Vanderbilt University’s newest Commodores will arrive on campus en masse on Saturday, Aug. 22.
New student move-in at The Commons, the university’s campus within a campus for first-year students that opened last year, is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. In The Commons, students live in 10 residence halls known as “houses,” which are led by a faculty member who lives in an apartment in each house. The dean of The Commons also lives there with his family in a separate residence. Dean of The Commons Frank Wcislo along with the faculty heads of house will be on hand to greet new students, their families and friends.
This year’s move-in will also be “greener” than ever before. The university has made some changes this year to improve the environmental impact of move-in weekend. In past years, more than 20,000 bottles of water were handed out to students and their families during move-in. This year, 12 water cooler filling stations will be set up at strategic points around the residence halls in an effort to reduce waste. Each first-year student will receive a reusable water bottle that is made in the United States of BPA-free plastic that can be filled from the coolers. Styrofoam recycling will also be offered for the first time this year and all materials in the housing assignment packet given to first-year students were printed on paper with recycled content. (Ongoing recycling for paper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum cans is already provided in each residence hall).
