Werner Herzog film set in Antarctica to be screened free at Vanderbilt

Academy Award-nominated documentary Encounters at the End of the World will be screened free-of-charge on April 6 at Vanderbilt University, followed by a discussion led by a producer of the film.

The film by Werner Herzog will be shown at 7 p.m. at Sarratt Cinema on the Vanderbilt campus in the Sarratt Student Center, 2301 Vanderbilt Place.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be attended by Henry Kaiser, a producer of the film and an underwater diver and photographer whose imagery is used in it.

The documentary, set in Antarctica, explores the range of personalities who have been drawn to spend their working lives in one of the world’s harshest environments. From research scientists to blue collar workers, Herzog’s subjects demonstrate a self-reliance and intrepid sense of adventure that both equip them for their frigid surroundings and place them outside the mainstream of society.

The Vanderbilt screening is sponsored by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the Science and Engineering Library and the Film Studies Program, all of Vanderbilt.
