One hundred sixteen Vanderbilt graduate students will present original research at the Graduate Student Research Symposium on Monday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Life Center ballrooms and meeting rooms. The symposium, one of several events scheduled for Graduate Education Week, is free and open to the public.
Topics are wide-ranging and include:
• “Cannibal Corpses and other Abominations: What the Undead Tell Us About Ourselves,” at 12 p.m. in the Board of Trust room
• “Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers for Today’s Students,” at 12 p.m. in Ballroom C.
• “Macroeconomics: Everyday Low Prices and Temporary Price Reductions,” at 1:15 in Meeting Room 1.
“Participation by graduate students in our research symposium is purely voluntary and thus reflects their desire to receive positive feedback on the progression of their dissertation research,” said Molly Brown, graduate student in pharmacology at Vanderbilt and vice-president of the Graduate Student Council. “Therefore, the success of the symposium strongly relies upon faculty and fellow graduate students from all disciplines attending and being an active participant in one of the symposium’s presentation or poster sessions.”
A display of posters encompassing research from a wide range of disciplines will be available for viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Ballroom A. To see a full schedule of presentations, visit http://studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu/gsc/doc/gsrs_abstracts_schedule_2009.pdf.
A keynote address will end the day at 4:10 p.m. in Ballroom C. Dr. Susan Basalla, co-author of the book, So What are You Going to do with That? Finding Careers Outside Academia, will lecture followed by a reception and book signing.
Gov. Phil Bredesen declared March 30-April 3, 2009, as Graduate Education Week throughout Tennessee in recognition of the contributions graduate students make to the state.
Other activities for Vanderbilt graduate students during the week include a special workshop on Saturday, March 28, about competing for grants and fellowships and presentations from students to the leadership of the House Committee on Education at the Tennessee Legislature on Wednesday, April 1.
