In a poor economic climate riddled with corporate scandals, good leadership can be hard to find. The Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the Professions at Vanderbilt University will present a workshop about “Personal Responsibility and Moral Leadership in the Professions” on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Vanderbilt Divinity School’s Reading Room.
The workshop will focus on transformational leadership that occurs when a leader takes a visionary position and inspires people to follow. This leadership style calls upon leaders to embody and model the changes they are advocating.
The workshop will be led by Steve Olson, the director of The Center for Ethics in Public Policy and the Professions at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University, where he teaches ethics, leadership and corporate responsibility in the Executive, Global and Professional MBA programs.
Based on research and techniques developed at Harvard University, the workshop aims to deepen participants’ insights into, and accountability for, their behavior as they seek to lead in the face of moral challenges in the professions. Participants will use The Real Reason People Won’t Change, published by the Harvard Business Review by Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey, as part of the course materials.

The Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the Professions is a university-wide program dedicated to the discussion and promotion of moral values relevant to the professional schools (Divinity, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Owen Graduate School of Management) and the practice of the professions. It seeks to foster an environment conducive to faculty research and teaching in areas associated with moral leadership, develop students’ ability to provide moral leadership within their chosen professions as well as within the broader community, and provide a resource to professionals in the community.
