MEDIA ADVISORY: Vanderbilt University’s new living-learning community The Commons opens to first-year students Aug. 16

The undergraduate experience at Vanderbilt University is undergoing its most significant transformation with its new campus within a campus for first-year students, The Commons, opening Saturday, Aug. 16.

New student move-in at The Commons is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. In The Commons, students will live within 10 residence halls known as "houses," which will be led by a faculty member who will live in an apartment in each house. The dean of The Commons will also live there with his family in a separate residence.

Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos, Dean of Admissions Doug Christiansen and Dean of The Commons Frank Wcislo will officially open the new community at The Commons convocation Sunday, Aug. 17, at 9:30 a.m.

WHAT: Move-in for first-year students and The Commons convocation, the official
opening of Vanderbilt’s new living-learning community for first-year students.

WHERE: The Commons is on the southeastern part of campus near Peabody College.

WHEN: Move-in: Saturday, Aug. 16, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Commons Convocation: Sunday, Aug. 17, 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

PARKING: Parking is available in the surface lot and parking garage at Village at Vanderbilt
– enter off 21st Avenue South.
