New registrar Cheng H. Khoo hired by Vanderbilt University

The new university registrar at
Vanderbilt University is Cheng H. Khoo. He begins work immediately.

For the last decade, Khoo (Cheng is his family name) was the director of admissions and records at
West Virginia University
. Before that, he spent 10 years at the University of Kansas in student systems development and academic technology.

A 1980 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a degree in mathematics, Khoo also holds a master’s in operations research from Case Western Reserve, and is a doctoral candidate in educational leadership in higher education at
West Virginia University.

Khoo will play a key role at Vanderbilt. The university registrar’s office is the trustee of all student record information including transcripts and enrollment history. The relationship of the registrar’s office to the undergraduate and graduate schools is vital to the seamless gathering and transfer of student information throughout campus, all course scheduling and the overall academic calendar for the university.

Khoo was selected after a national search to replace Gary Gibson, who retired this month after more than 25 years leading the registrar’s office. "The search committee was unanimous in selecting Cheng Khoo as the person best suited to keep this important university function at the forefront of accuracy and efficiency as we all adapt quickly to ever-changing technology," said Doug Christiansen, associate provost for enrollment and dean of admissions. "The university registrar’s office will continue to be in excellent hands."

While at
West Virginia University, Khoo oversaw systemic upgrades including the implementation of the class registration system on the Internet, replaced the use of students’ social security number as their university identifier to protect against identity theft and dramatically increased the efficiency of admissions processing.
