Vanderbilt Police Department stepping up efforts to enforce seat belt laws as part of nationwide campaign

Vanderbilt University’s police department is joining with hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country to intensify efforts to enforce seat belt laws during the 2008 Click It or Ticket campaign May 12 – June 1.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 15,046 passenger vehicle occupants were killed between the hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. in 2006. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of those killed at night were not wearing seat belts — compared to less than half (46 percent) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed during daytime hours.

Vanderbilt Police Department‘s goal is to increase awareness of seatbelt safety and increase overall seat belt usage. In support of the campaign, Vanderbilt Police will conduct seat belt checkpoints in various places and times throughout campus.
