A distinguished group of scholars, journalists and activists will grapple with some of the thorniest issues of immigration during a symposium organized by Carol Swain, a Vanderbilt University professor of political science and law. The symposium will focus on the same themes as Debating Immigration, a book published by Cambridge University Press that Swain edited. Issues to be considered include the impact of immigration on projected population growth, costs and benefits of immigration and whether immigrants take jobs from native-born workers. T. Alexander Aleinikoff, dean of Georgetown University Law School, will deliver the opening keynote address at 4 p.m. today. For more information, call Marita Bush at (615) 322-3710.
