Protestant leaders are on an endless quest to make their worship rituals relevant while keeping sight of traditions. During a three-part Relevant Religion workshop beginning Sept. 25, two Vanderbilt Divinity School professors will consider the effectiveness of various new worship styles.
The “Worship(ing) in the Converging Church” workshops will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 at Second Presbyterian Church, 3511 Belmont Blvd. Cost to attend all three workshops is $10 per person. “Protestant worship has been in transition for half a millennium. Ministers, preachers, lay leaders, worship teams, musicians and artists all try to address the perceived and sometimes contradictory needs for renewal, contemporaneity, identity, doctrinal coherence and cultural relevance,” said Robin M. Jensen and John S. McClure. “This set of workshops will explore new worship styles and the questions of tradition, retrieval, evangelism, and pluralism in our planning for the worship of the future.”
Jensen, the Luce Chancellor’s Professor of the History of Christian Art will lead the workshops with McClure, the Charles G. Finney Professor of Homiletics.
