‘Be True to Your School’ on College Colors Day

To borrow a line from a classic Beach Boys song, all Vanderbilt fans are invited “to be true to their school” on Aug. 31 when the campus community and various area businesses will celebrate College Colors Day.

This is the first year that Vanderbilt has participated in the national initiative, established by Collegiate Licensing Company to promote school spirit on the Friday prior to the first Saturday of the college football season for most schools. Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff as well as employees at participating businesses are encouraged to wear Vanderbilt apparel on the day before Vanderbilt’s season-opener against the University of Richmond.

Vanderbilt’s Office of Trademark Licensing, the Vanderbilt Bookstore and Vanderbilt Athletics have teamed up to give interested individuals the chance to trade in their well-worn college T-shirt or cap for a 25 percent discount on a Vanderbilt apparel item. This offer will be available at the bookstore from Aug. 20 to Aug. 31, and the discount applies to each item. All donated items will be given to charity.

During the same time frame, fans of country music artist Brad Paisley will receive one ticket for every $25 spent at the Vanderbilt Bookstore to enter a drawing for a limited edition, life-size stand-up of Paisley. In addition, businesses which take part in Vanderbilt’s College Colors Day will receive a special discount on six or more of the same item purchased at the bookstore.

“We are excited to join universities throughout the country by participating in College Colors Day,” said Mary Ann Daniel-Kaszuba, marketing specialist with the Office of Trademark Licensing. “We encourage Vanderbilt fans to go all out and show their support of the university by wearing their black and gold on Aug. 31.”

The first 20 Nashville businesses to submit photos of their employees wearing Vanderbilt apparel on Aug. 31 will receive 10 free tickets to the Vanderbilt vs. Miami of Ohio game on Oct. 27. In addition, the first 25 Vanderbilt departments, schools or groups to submit photos will receive Vanderbilt prizes. Photos must be submitted between Aug. 31 and Sept. 10. The winners’ photos will appear on the Vanderbilt Athletics website. Photos may be submitted to maryann.daniel-kaszuba@vanderbilt.edu.
