Three Vanderbilt students win Goldwater Scholarships; Program encourages careers in math, science and engineering

Three Vanderbilt University students have been awarded 2007 Goldwater Scholarships, earning up to $7,500 a year to pursue the study of mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

Samuel D. Cooper, Brent M. Dorr and Peter C. Scully were among 317 sophomores and juniors announced this month as scholarship recipients by Peggy Goldwater Clay, chair of the board of trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, based in Springfield, Va.

Cooper, a sophomore math major from Birmingham, Ala., plans to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics and conduct research into algebraic topology. Dorr, a junior from Cary, N.C., is studying molecular biology and chemistry and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in computational structural biology. Scully, a junior double major in physics and classics from Memphis, plans to earn a Ph.D. in medical physics and hopes to develop new tools for the treatment of catastrophic childhood diseases.

The Goldwater Scholarships honor the late Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., who ran for president in 1964.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected from a field of 1,110 math, science and engineering students nominated by faculty. Winners were selected on the basis of academic merit.
