Vanderbilt Web site offers “smorgasbord” of summer programs

Parents wanting to expand their children‘s horizons this summer through a variety of programs – ranging from sports to art, music and academics – simply need to click onto the Vanderbilt website for a comprehensive listing.

Summer Programs at Vanderbilt is an online directory of university-wide camps, programs and activities for children in grades K-12. Contact information is provided for all the listings on the website: www.vanderbilt.edu/cngr/summer_programs.

“Vanderbilt‘s online directory fills an important need for parents who want to find outstanding summer programs that bring children to campus for fun as well as creative and skill-building opportunities,” said Misty White, program coordinator in Vanderbilt‘s Office of Community, Neighborhood and Government Relations, which created and maintains the directory. “There are more than 20 offerings, so parents who are already familiar with Vanderbilt‘s sports camps can learn about the Space Exploration Summer Camp sponsored by Dyer Observatory and the Blair School of Music‘s Kindermusik Summer Adventures Classes.”

Included on the website is a link to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children‘s Hospital camp directory, which lists summer programs for children with chronic illnesses and disabilities in Middle Tennessee. Other links for children with special needs include the TRIAD Summer Camp for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Williams Syndrome Music Camp.

The Vanderbilt Program for Talented Youth, which offers summer residential programs for academically talented rising 8th-12th grade students, and PAVE, a six-week program designed to strengthen academic skills of students planning to enter a college engineering, pre-medical, science or technology program, are other offerings.

A wide variety of sports camps will be held, such as Kevin Stallings‘ Basketball Camp, Nike Lacrosse Camp and Vanderbilt Soccer Academy. There are also links to camps offered by groups outside of Vanderbilt, such as the Adventure Science Center, Cheekwood and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Families are encouraged to look now at the various summer programs as some of them fill up quickly and have application deadlines. For more information about the directory, contact the Office of Community, Neighborhood and Government Relations at 343-0700.
