Vanderbilt professor part of slavery abolition celebrations in Great Britain; The Rev. Brad Braxton to preach at Westminster Abbey on March 11

A Vanderbilt University Divinity School professor will preach at Westminster Abbey during a lecture tour of England this month that is part of the bicentennial celebration of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire.

The Rev. Brad Braxton, associate professor of homiletics and New Testament, will tour England in his role as the Bray Lecturer, selected by the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, both of London. The Bray lectureship provides an opportunity for an academic theologian with church connections to learn and give lectures in two international contexts.

Braxton visited and spoke in Ghana late last year for the first part of the lectureship. His English tour begins March 7 at King‘s College London and includes seven lectures, wrapping up on March 15.

The Westminster Abbey sermon is at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 11. He will speak on peace and nonviolence.

“In a world full of violence, the call for peace must increasingly come from religious communities,” Braxton said. “I hope my sermon at Westminster Abbey and lectures throughout England will facilitate in some small way the public dialogue about justice and peace.”
