Afeni Shakur, former member of the Black Panther Party, community outreach activist and mother of slain rap artist Tupac Shakur, is the keynote speaker during a series of events commemorating Black History Month at Vanderbilt University.
Shakur‘s lecture is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the ballroom of Vanderbilt‘s Student Life Center, located on 25th Avenue South near Vanderbilt Place. Other events scheduled include the following. All events are free and open to the public.

Feb. 14 “In the Black” Series – A talk by Sam Latham, publisher of Onyx
magazine. The “In the Black” Series highlights black entrepreneurs.

Feb. 16 “Black Atlantic History: The 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of
Slavery in England” – An event featuring lectures by Phillip Morgan,
Harry C. Black Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, and
Christopher Brown, associate professor of history at Rutgers University.
