Vanderbilt to host domestic violence seminar Feb. 9

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ministers and others interested in combating domestic violence may attend a seminar on Feb. 9 hosted by Vanderbilt University Divinity School.

The “Ignorance is Not Bliss: Violence against Women and What Ministers Need to Know” seminar will offer instruction on how to help victims of domestic violence. A panel of experts will explore why violence against women is considered acceptable by some, how religion contributes to and challenges that acceptance and how to care for victims of violence.

Panelists include Linda Manning, director of the Margaret Cuninggim Women‘s Center; Amy-Jill Levine, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament; Barbara McClure, assistant professor of pastoral theology; Brad Braxton, associate professor of homiletics and New Testament; and John McClure, Charles G. Finney Professor of Homiletics, chair of the Graduate Department of Religion and Fellow in the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture.

The seminar will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Divinity School in room G-23. A reception will follow in Tillett Lounge at the Divinity School. Both are free and open to the public.
