Vanderbilt welcomes new and returning students to campus life

Approximately 1,600 Vanderbilt University freshmen will descend upon campus Saturday, Aug. 19, when residence halls open for all new students. A wide variety of activities are scheduled around the start of the school year including:

Saturday, Aug. 19
• Residence halls open for all new students at 7 a.m. The official Move Crew, which includes Chancellor Gee and the cookie patrol, will assist students and their families with the move-in, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Chancellor Gee’s Welcoming Address to Parents and Families – 4:45 to 5:15 p.m., Memorial Practice Gym.
• Founders Walk – Freshmen and transfer students walk together through the gates of Vanderbilt with this annual tradition. For the first time, families will join the students for the procession and hear remarks from Chancellor Gee and others, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., West End Avenue at 24th Avenue South to Wilson Lawn (severe weather location — Memorial Practice Gym).
• Founders Walk Picnic – Students and their families enjoy picnic fare, Alumni Lawn, 7:30 p.m. (severe weather location — Sarratt Promenade and Rand Hall)
Sunday, Aug. 20
• Nashville @ Night – Freshmen board buses for a taste of Nashville’s culture, 6:30 to 11:30 p.m., various Nashville locations.
Tuesday, Aug. 22
• Commodores in the Community – New students perform community service throughout the Nashville community, 1 to 4 p.m.
• Honor Code Ceremony and Signing, 7:30 to 10 p.m. All members of the freshman class will gather to sign their names as a pledge to Vanderbilt’s honor code. The signatures will be hung later in the Sarratt Student Center.
• Wednesday, Aug. 23
First day of classes.
