Ed Colker to lecture on “Modern Arts of the Book”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ed Colker, a noted print-maker and book publisher, will address “Modern Arts of the Book,” at 4:10 pm. on Jan. 16 in 114 Furman Hall. A reception will follow his illustrated lecture, which will cover many of the major art movements of the 20th century.

A former provost of both the Pratt Institute and Cooper Union in New York City, Colker is an expert on continental printing and the production of limited editions of illustrated works of literature. He spent two years in France while on a Guggenheim fellowship befriending and studying with some of the printers who helped such artists as Picasso and Matisse. He continued to work in a French artist’s studio for several years, publishing in the tradition of the French “livre du peintre.”

Colker has a strong interest in the holdings of the Pascal Pia collection in the W.T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies at Vanderbilt. Many of the important French editions he has studied are represented in the collection. For more information about the W.T. Bandy Center, click on www.library.vanderbilt.edu/bandy.
