Vanderbilt names Johnson to head internal audit

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Following a national search, Vanderbilt University has named R. Dennis Johnson executive director of Internal Audit. Johnson has served as interim executive director since June.

Prior to joining Vanderbilt as assistant director of Internal Audit in 2001, Johnson was senior manager of information systems assurance and advisory services with Ernst & Young in Nashville and director of operational and systems risk management for PricewaterhouseCoopers in St. Louis. He has 29 years of experience in internal audit and information systems, serving a broad range of organizations including Service Merchandise and Bridgestone/Firestone.

“Of all the candidates that our search process identified, none was more qualified and better suited to the position than Dennis,” said Lauren Brisky, vice chancellor for administration and chief financial officer. “We are fortunate to have had such a strong candidate within our ranks. Dennis brings to his new role a long and distinguished career and a keen understanding of Vanderbilt.”

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting from the University of Tennessee. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Brisky chaired the search committee. Committee members included Edward G. Nelson, a member of the Board of Trust and chairman of the Audit Committee; Nim Chinniah, deputy vice chancellor for administration and academic affairs; Maria Garner, university counsel; Tim Getsay, assistant vice chancellor of management information systems and associate chief information architect; Dennis Hall, associate provost for research and graduate education; Kevin Myatt, associate vice chancellor for human resources and chief human resources officer; Betty Price, associate vice chancellor for finance and controller; Norman Urmy, executive vice president for clinical affairs; and J. Richard Wagers Jr., senior vice president and chief financial officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
