MEDIA ADVISORY – Biomedical pioneer to speak on tissue engineering and drug-delivery innovations

Credited with launching the fields of sustained drug delivery and tissue engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Institute Professor Robert S. Langer will give the John R. and Donna S. Hall Engineering Lecture at Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11.

Recognized as one of the most prolific medical inventors in history, Langer holds more than 500 patents and is the youngest person in history to have been elected to all three U.S. National Academies. As Hall Lecturer, he will discuss advances in drug delivery and tissue engineering that are revolutionizing medical therapies. He will explain how drug delivery technologies, including novel polymers and intelligent microchips, promise to create new treatments for cancer, heart disease and many other illnesses. Novel aerosol designs will also be discussed. He will also discuss research into combining mammalian cells with synthetic polymers, creating new approaches for engineering tissues that may someday help repair tissues for patients with burns, damaged cartilage, paralysis and vascular disease.
