Vanderbilt University has been awarded the 2005 Tennessee Pollution
Prevention Partnership Green Schools Award for recycling by the
Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
TDEC Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan will present the award to
Chancellor Gordon Gee, General Services Director Lisbeth Wyatt and
representatives from Students Promoting Environmental Awareness and
Recycling, or SPEAR, on Wednesday, April 27, at 10:30 a.m. in Kirkland
Hall, Room 201, on the Vanderbilt campus.
The award recognizes SPEAR‘s projects this year, which include a new
cardboard recycling program to coincide with move-in day, printer
cartridge recycling, an environmental-themed “Lunch on the Lawn” event,
a weeklong Earth Day celebration and increasing recycling opportunities
during all major student events. The university actively recycles
paper, aluminum, plastic, cardboard, toner cartridges and fluorescent
tubes, as well as reusable clothing, furniture and appliances, which
are donated to local civic groups for resale.
