Vanderbilt faculty awards conferred at spring assembly

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ñ Vanderbilt Chancellor Gordon Gee presented five
faculty members with annual awards when Vanderbilt‘s Spring Faculty
Assembly convened April 4.

The Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching was
presented to Jo-Anne Bachorowski, associate professor of psychology.

The Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching was
presented to G. Kane Jennings, assistant professor of chemical
engineering. Recipients of both the Madison Sarratt Prize and the Ellen
Gregg Ingalls Award are chosen by the Chancellor based on nominations
made by undergraduate students.

The Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award was given to Harold
Moses, the Benjamin F. Byrd Jr. Professor of Clinical Oncology.
Established in 1963 to honor Chancellor Emeritus Harvie Branscomb, the
award is given to a full-time faculty member for distinguished
accomplishment in furthering the aims of the university.

The Alexander Heard Distinguished Service Professor Award was presented
to Kathryn Edwards, professor of pediatric infectious diseases and vice
chair of clinical research in the Department of Pediatrics. Created in
1982 to honor Chancellor Emeritus Alexander Heard, the award is given
to a full-time faculty member for distinctive contributions to the
understanding of problems of contemporary society.

The Joe B. Wyatt Distinguished University Professor Award was given to
Gary Jensen, professor of sociology and religious studies. Established
in 2000 to honor Chancellor Emeritus Joe Wyatt, the award recognizes a
full-time faculty member for the development of significant new
knowledge from research or exemplary innovations in teaching and is
intended to recognize accomplishments that span multiple academic
disciplines.

Each of the five award recipients received a $2,500 cash prize. In
addition, Bachorowski and Jennings received engraved pewter cups and
Moses, Edwards and Jensen received engraved silver trays commemorating
their honors.
