MEDIA ADVISORY–Vanderbilt students to celebrate creative challenge of engineering

The engineering students at Vanderbilt University will display their
ingenuity and inventiveness through a series of challenging — but fun —
competitions and events to be held during National Engineers Week Feb.
21-25. In addition to spotlighting the engineering field, the
competitions and activities are designed to interest students in
engineering and scientific fields. The media and the public are invited.

Activities include the following competitions at Featheringill Atrium:

Egg Drop: Egg Drop containers will be tested by dropping them from a
construction crane. Vanderbilt engineering students will have only one
hour to transform an unassembled FedEx box and some odds and ends into
a clever container that will safely cushion its cargo egg from a
precipitous plunge from atop a crane. Cash prizes will be awarded.
Noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Tower Building: Students compete to design and build the tallest
tower using an equal amount of uncooked spaghetti sticks and
marshmallows. Gift certificate prizes. Noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23.

Fastest Geek: Engineering students race to assemble a computer, with
the winner receiving a free Dell laptop computer. 11a.m.-4 p.m.,
Thursday, Feb. 24; finals 12:15-1 p.m. Friday, Feb.25.

Engineering Week at Vanderbilt is sponsored by Dell Computer Corp.,
D.F. Chase Construction, FedEx and Vanderbilt Dining Services.

National Engineers Week was first established in 1951 by the
National Society of Professional Engineers. It is traditionally held
the week of Presidents Day, because George Washington was a military
engineer and a land surveyor.

Featheringill Hall is located on the Vanderbilt University campus behind the Free Electron Laser Building. For a map, visit http://www.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/eweek.
