NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Performance artist and sexuality educator Annie
Sprinkle will give a lecture Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. at the
Belcourt Theatre located at 2102 Belcourt Ave.
Her talk — sponsored by Vanderbilt University‘s women‘s studies
program, Department of Sociology and Department of Communications
Studies and Theatre — is part of a series of programs scheduled this
academic year as part of the university‘s continuing efforts designed
to provide an open forum for informed discussion about sexual issues.
Sprinkle, a former prostitute and adult film star, has made
presentations at colleges and universities around the country
addressing topics such as sex positive feminism, censorship, sexually
explicit art and filmmaking and the sex workers rights movement.
Only persons 18 years old and older will be admitted to Sprinkle‘s
lecture. Admission is free with a Vanderbilt University I.D.
Tickets for the public may be purchased for $7 at the Belcourt Theatre
box office.
“We see a number of open debates about a variety of issues, but people
rarely talk directly about sex,” said Monica J. Casper, feminist
scholar, medical sociologist and the new director of Vanderbilt‘s
women‘s studies program.
“Sociologically, sex is a hot topic and the more people know about
their bodies and the political and intellectual issues related to sex,
and the more women are empowered in sexual situations, the safer and
healthier sexual relationships will be,” Casper said.
