TIPSHEET: A repeat of 2000? Courts might play role in presidential race

(Broadcast media note: Vanderbilt has a campus broadcast facility with
a dedicated fiber optic line for live TV interviews and a radio ISDN
line.)

A legacy of the 2000 election is the increased likelihood that the 2004
and subsequent presidential races will end up in the courts, says
Suzanna Sherry, Cal Turner Professor of Law and Leadership at
Vanderbilt University. “The various opinions from Bush v. Gore opened
the door to arguments not previously credible or available, and, with
such a close election expected this year, there will be an incentive
for more challenges,” Sherry says. One of the most visible commentators
during the weeks following Election Day 2000, Sherry is available to
discuss the history and role of the electoral college, the role courts
may play in the election and procedural questions about how challenges
are filed.
