A new approach to effective sermons, Vanderbilt homiletics expert to offer seminar based on book

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ñ Ministers who want to freshen or rethink their approach to writing and delivering sermons are invited to a six-hour seminar led by John McClure, a Vanderbilt University homiletics professor and co-author of a book on the subject.

The "Claiming Theology in the Pulpit" seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Vanderbilt Divinity School, 411 21st Ave. S. The cost is $50 per person. To register, phone 615-343-3994 or go to www.vanderbilt.edu/divinity, click on "Events" and then "Ministry Today."

The seminar is part of a commitment by the divinity school to be a continuing resource for the community.

"Vanderbilt Divinity School is brimming with talented religious educators who have a tremendous amount to offer the wider community of professionals and laity," said McClure, Charles G. Finney Professor of Homiletics and chair of the Vanderbilt Graduate Department of Religion. "This is a generation in which religious issues have become troubling on a global scale.

"We at the divinity school are committed to finding every way possible to help the wider community sort through these issues and find their way toward a constructive vision of religious truth for today."

Seminar participants will read the first half of Claiming Theology in the Pulpit by McClure and Burton Cooper prior to the class and take a test in the book that will help them clarify their theological positions.

"Then we will brainstorm sermons together" using the results of the exercise, McClure said.
