Guthrie appointed associate dean at Vanderbilt University Law School

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ñ Chris Guthrie has been appointed associate dean for academic affairs at Vanderbilt University Law School.

Guthrie, who joined the faculty in 2002 and is also a professor of law at the school, follows Robert K. Rasmussen as associate dean. Rasmussen, also a professor of law, served in this role from 2002 until earlier this year.

As associate dean for academic affairs, Guthrie plays a leadership role in the academic life of the law school; among other responsibilities, he will promote research programs, mentor junior faculty, set the curriculum and organize speakers brought to the school.

"Chris Guthrie will be a great associate dean for academic affairs," said Kent D. Syverud, dean of the law school and Garner Anthony Professor of Law. "Chris is an outstanding scholar and teacher, and, in his new capacity, he will continue to advance the scholarship and teaching of our faculty."

A leading dispute resolution and decision-making scholar, Guthrie began his academic career at the University of Missouri School of Law, where he was associate dean, associate professor and senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution. He also served as a visiting professor at Washington University School of Law and Northwestern University Law School. He has been recognized for his teaching and research, including the 2003 CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution Professional Article Prize, the 2003-04 Outstanding First Year Course Professor Award at Northwestern, and sharing in the 2001 CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution Professional Article prize. Prior to teaching, Guthrie practiced law with Fenwick & West LLP in Palo Alto, Calif.

"I am looking forward to working with my colleagues as we continue our efforts to build upon Vanderbilt’s tradition of path-breaking scholarship and rigorous teaching," Guthrie said. "The contributions of Bob Rasmussen on these fronts have enriched the intellectual atmosphere for all members of the Vanderbilt community."
