BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Commodores – junior wide receiver Erik Davis,
junior defensive end Jovan Haye and senior offensive tackle Justin
Geisinger – were named to the 2004 Media Days All-SEC Team, the league
announced July 29.
Davis, Haye and Geisinger were Second Team All-SEC recipients in the
vote conducted by beat writers and reporters covering the annual
Southeastern Conference Media Days in Birmingham.
Last week, Haye, junior quarterback Jay Cutler and tailback/return
specialist Kwane Doster were named to the coaches’ inaugural preseason
All-SEC Team Thursday.
The Commodores open preseason camp August 11, pointing toward the 2004
season opener against South Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 4. The
opener is scheduled at Vanderbilt Stadium, with kickoff at 11:30 a.m.
Vanderbilt Head Coach Bobby Johnson endorsed the media all-league
ballot. "All three players are very deserving. I’m especially
happy for Erik and Justin, because they were not included in the
coaches’ team. We also have several other players who deserve to
be considered for this honor," Johnson said.
Haye, a two-year captain, has been named to the first or second team of
nearly every preseason All-SEC ballot. He also has been added to
several preseason watch lists for prestigious individual recognition,
including the Hendricks and Nagurski awards.
Haye enters the season ater posting one of the finest campaigns ever by
a Vanderbilt defensive end. Haye shared the SEC regular-season
lead last year with 8.5 sacks and topped the Commodores with 12.5
tackles for loss. SEC coaches named Haye second-team All-SEC in
2003.
Geisinger, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is named to the media All-SEC
team after being snubbed by league coaches. The massive 6-4,
330-lb. senior is a two-time captain, and regarded as one of the SEC’s
most underrated players. Several preseason publications list
Geisinger as one of the nation’s elite offensive tackles. He was
recently named to the Outland Trophy preseason watch list.
Davis is coming off a breakout season in 2003 and is one of the SEC’s
top returning receivers. He posted team highs with 41 receptions,
638 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches last year.
