MEDIA ADVISORY–Vanderbilt University education professor testifies at U.S. Senate committee hearing on proposed Pell Grants for K-12 education

Vanderbilt University education professor Ellen Goldring will
testify in Washington, D.C., Thursday, July 15, at 10 a.m. EDT at the
U.S. Senate hearing "Pell Grants for Kids." The hearing is before the
Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. U.S. Sen. Lamar
Alexander, chairman of the panel’s Subcommittee on Children and
Families, has proposed Pell Grants for Kids, an annual $500 scholarship
that would follow every middle- and low-income child to the school or
other accredited academic program of his or her parent’s choosing.

Goldring, professor of education policy and leadership at Vanderbilt
University’s Peabody College of education and human development, will
discuss the possible benefits and challenges of awarding the
scholarships to help improve educational opportunities for K-12
students. Her research has focused on school reform efforts, school
choice and diversity, equity and access in the post-busing era.
