MEDIA ADVISORY–Vanderbilt Kennedy Center to sponsor camp for youth with Down syndrome

Explorers Unlimited, a four-week academic camp for adolescents and
young adults with Down syndrome, is being held at the University School
of Nashville, July 6-30.

The camp provides an academic enrichment program for youth that
builds on individual strengths in reading, math and social awareness.
Now in its third year, it is one of the first summer academic camps for
adolescents and young adults with Down syndrome in the United States.

The Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee and the Vanderbilt
Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development are co-sponsors of the
camp. Frist Center for the Visual Arts staff will provide arts
education.

WHAT: Explorers Unlimited, an academic camp for youth with Down syndrome

WHERE: University School of Nashville, corner of 21st Avenue South and Edgehill Avenue

WHEN: Monday-Friday, July 6-30, 8:30 a.m.-3:30
p.m. Call Traci Fleishchman at 322-6256 for daily schedule and to
schedule visit. Reading instruction and life skills sessions, 8:45-9:45
a.m. daily
Arts education by Frist Center staff, Wednesdays, 1-2 p.m.
Music with Travis Stinson, bluegrass singer and songwriter for the Volunteer String Band, Mondays, 1-2 p.m.

SPECIAL Friday, July 23, 2-3 p.m.: talent show
EVENTS: Wednesday, July 28, 1-2 p.m.: Frist Center for the Visual Arts tour
Friday,
July 30, 1-3 p.m.: closing slide show, awards and art exhibit and Date
