Vanderbilt band to share music with community in pair of free concerts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Springtime means longer days, warmer weather and
the return of outdoor community gatherings, and Vanderbilt University’s
Community Concert Band plans to usher in the season with an evening of
free music on Tuesday, April 13.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Rand Terrace at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Student
Center, the band will perform Malcolm Arnold’s "Four Scottish Dances"
and "Prelude, Siciliano & Rondo," Gary Nash’s "Fraternal Prelude,"

John Barnes Chance’s "Korean Folk Songs," and-in a nod to the still
warmer season to come-"Summer Music" by former Vanderbilt assistant
band director Joe Laird. The band will cap the concert with a
performance of John Philip Sousa’s rousing "Washington Post March,"
during which audience members will be invited to conduct the band.

On Sunday, April 18, Vanderbilt’s Community Concert Band will share
the stage at Glencliff High School with the Nashville Community Band in
a joint concert. The performance begins at 3 p.m. and is also open to
the public.

"The Vanderbilt Community Concert Band is excited about giving a
free concert at Glencliff High School," said Dwayne Sagen, director of
University Bands at Vanderbilt and assistant dean of the Blair School
of Music. Sagen cites the pair of concerts as an example of the
University sharing its resources and the diverse talents of its people
with the larger Nashville community.

The Vanderbilt Community Concert Band comprises 70 members,
including Vanderbilt undergraduate and professional students, medical
students and residents, law students, faculty and staff, area public
school teachers and band directors, state government employees and
other musicians in the community.

In the event of rain on April 13, the concert will be cancelled. For
