Oak Ridge student wins Tennessee Brain Bee Competition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2004 Tennessee Statewide Brain Bee Award will be
presented to Jingyuan Wu of Oak Ridge High School at Vanderbilt
University at noon on Thursday, March 11.

The Tennessee Statewide Brain Bee Competition gives students in grades
9 through 12 across the state an opportunity to learn about the brain,
have fun and win prizes, including the honor of being the high school
student who knows the most about the brain in the state of Tennessee.
Students compete through Vanderbilt’s Virtual School website at www.vanderbilt.edu/virtualschool.

Wu achieved a contest all-time high score of 97. As Tennessee’s winner,
Wu will compete in the International Brain Bee at the University of
Maryland Medical School in Baltimore on March 19-21.

After receiving his award on March 11, Wu will tour laboratories of
Vanderbilt brain researchers, including the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center’s
Psychobiology Laboratory, where researchers measure children’s brain
activity during tasks involving learning.

The Brain Bee is sponsored by Vanderbilt University as part of the
Vanderbilt Brain Institute’s Brain Awareness celebration throughout the
month of March. The celebration is held in conjunction with Brain
Awareness Week, an international brain research education effort
coordinated by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society
for Neuroscience. For more information, visit http://medschool1.mc.vanderbilt.edu/brain_institute/.
