Oscar-nominated film Spellbound at Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Cinema Feb. 18-21, Film’s producer to speak following Feb. 18, 19 showings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Los Angeles-based film producer Sean Welch rolls
into Nashville Feb. 18 and 19 for showings of his Academy
Award-nominated documentary Spellbound at Vanderbilt University’s
Sarratt Cinema.

Welch will address the audience following the 7 p.m. showings of the
film on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and Thursday, Feb. 19. Tickets are $5 for
the Nashville community and are available at the box office in Sarratt
Student Center. Spellbound is scheduled to run at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at
Sarratt Cinema Wednesday, Feb. 18, through Saturday, Feb. 21.

Spellbound follows eight children of various ages as they compete
through regional finals to qualify for-and hopefully win-the 1999
National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Nine million kids try each
year, but only 250 make it to the national competition.

The youngsters featured in the movie come from vastly different
backgrounds-from families ranging from the affluent to the struggling.
The central theme of the film is that anything is possible through hard
work.

Spellbound is Welch’s first film. The low-budget documentary-he and
director Jeff Blitz financed the movie with credit cards-became an
enormous success that garnered a Best Documentary Feature nomination at
last year’s Academy Awards.
