Women to discuss differing sexual identities Feb. 4 at Vanderbilt University

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt University’s Office for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Life offers an opportunity for lesbians, bisexual women and straight women to celebrate their differences and their friendships at BLAST, an event scheduled 6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4.

BLAST-Bi Women, Lesbians and Straight Women Together: Friendships Across Our Identities-will be held at the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center on the Vanderbilt University campus. The event, co-sponsored by the Women’s Center, is designed to be a casual conversation and is free and open to the public.

"Too often lesbians, bi women and straight women are portrayed as being on opposite sides of great chasms of difference," said Vanderbilt Women’s Studies librarian Melinda Brown, who is serving as the facilitator for the event.

"Yet women throughout history have had loving friendships with their mothers, daughters and best friends despite differing sexual identities," Brown added.

Jennifer Hackett, associate director of the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center at Vanderbilt, feels that all women’s voices should be heard. "In true sisterhood, there is only room for opening doors to all groups of people. I’m glad for the opportunity to provide space for women of many sexual identities to come together."
