MEDIA ADVISORY-Vanderbilt University commemorates Sept. 11

Vanderbilt University administrators, faculty, staff and students are invited to a series of campus events Thursday to mark the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

WHAT: A Time of Observance. Members of the campus community will hold a brief gathering to commemorate the loss of lives worldwide since Sept. 11, 2001. Members of the Vanderbilt University Band will play a musical selection and the Kirkland Hall tower chimes will sound. A "flame of hope" will also be lit at the ceremony and will remain lit throughout the day.

WHERE: Alumni Lawn

WHEN: 8:30 a.m.

WHAT: "9-11: Observations From Two Years Later," a brown bag lunch discussion of what has changed since 9/11 and how the United States is perceived around the world. A panel of Vanderbilt faculty ñ James Ray, professor of political science; Thomas Schwartz, associate professor of history, and Barbara Tsakirgis, associate professor of classics and art history ñ will participate in the discussion.

WHERE: Sarratt Student Center, Room 189

WHEN: noon-1:30 p.m.

WHAT: "Hope and Remembrance Tree." A tree on Alumni Lawn will be the site for students, faculty and staff to write messages and thoughts on pieces of cloth to encourage healing and reflection. The same tree was used following the attacks on America as an impromptu memorial to victims and as a way for students to share their emotions regarding the tragedy.
