NASHVILLE, Tenn. ñIn its annual guide to business schools, Business 2.0 magazine has included the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University on its list of "25 of the best business schools anywhere."
The list, published in the magazine’s September 2003 issue, is not a scientific survey like those published by other magazines and newspapers, but is intended instead to provide "an honest assessment of what you really get when you hire that fresh-faced Jane or Joe MBA." Compiled for employers rather than prospective students, the guide is based on "the word on the street."
Vanderbilt is listed alongside perennial favorites such as Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania.
The Business 2.0 list does not rank the schools, but grades each on four criteria and then offers an explanation of why the school is among the best in the world. The magazine explains that the "criteria aren’t quantifiable" measures, but "describe the qualities that give a well-educated MBA the extra something to make him or her a corporate star."
The four criteria on which the schools were assessed are
∑Job prospectsóhow competitive the hiring environment is at the school. Vanderbilt earned an "A."
∑Rolodexóhow strong the alumni network is, or an index to "the web of contacts your new recruit will bring to the position." Vanderbilt earned a "B."
∑Team players. Vanderbilt earned a "B."
∑Tech savvy. Vanderbilt earned a "C."
The magazine singled out the recently announced Sloan Center for Internet Retailing as an advantage of the school. "To develop a name for itself in e-commerce, the school recently announced the Sloan Center for Internet Retailing, which will study, among other things, how on-line behavior drives price expectations and traffic at brick-and-mortar stores," the article reads.
The Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University was named one of the 20 "tech-savviest" business schools in the December 2001 issue of Business 2.0 magazine.
Business 2.0, a monthly magazine about business, technology and innovation, is published out of The FORTUNE Group at Time Inc., an AOL Time Warner company.
