NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Mark Cohen has been appointed senior associate dean at Vanderbilt Universitys Owen Graduate School of Management, effective July 1.
Cohen, who joined the Owen School faculty in 1986, previously served as senior economist with the U.S. Sentencing Commission. He worked for the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Senate Banking Committee. Cohen currently serves as chairman of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Law and Justice Statistics.
Mark brings to this role a perfect combination of energy, strategic thinking and creativity, in addition to his dedication and commitment to Owen, said William G. Christie, dean and Ralph Owen Professor of Management at the Owen School. He added that Cohens taking on this expanded role at the school will allow Christie to focus more on external and corporate relations and on the successful completion of the fund-raising campaign.
Cohen, recently named the Justin Potter Professor in American Competitive Business, has served for 10 years as the co-director of the Vanderbilt Center for Environmental Management Studies. His primary research interests have been in the areas of government regulation, law and economics, white-collar and corporate crime and environmental management. His work has had a major influence in the U.S. Department of Justices analysis of the impact and cost of crime on corporations and society.
As senior associate dean, Ill take on an expanded role in the day-to-day operations of the school, essentially serving as the schools chief operating officer, Cohen said. His responsibilities will include the implementation of the strategic plan, research and budgets, faculty administration, mentoring faculty and chairing the committee on instruction. Im also looking forward to being the primary point of contact in the deans office for students and faculty on a range of issues, he added.
