Vanderbilt community band to perform free concert for Nashville neighbors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Springtime means warmer weather and the return of outdoor community gatherings, and Vanderbilt University’s Community Concert Band plans to usher in the season with an afternoon of music in the park.

As a “thank you” to its community neighbors for their continued support, the band is performing a free concert at Fannie Mae Dees Park on Sunday, April 6, at 5 p.m. “We invite everyone to bring a picnic supper, a blanket or lawn chair and come enjoy a beautiful spring afternoon while celebrating the neighbors of Vanderbilt,” said Dwayne Sagen, director of University Bands at Vanderbilt and assistant dean of the Blair School of Music.

Among the selections to be performed under Sagen’s direction are Gustov Holst’s classic “First Suite,” John Spaniola’s newly published “Escapade” and Blair School composer Michael Kurek’s “The Grand Calliope.” Children of the neighborhood will be invited to the podium to guest conduct the band.

The Vanderbilt Community Concert Band is comprised of more than 60 members, including Vanderbilt undergraduate and professional students, medical students and residents, law students, faculty and staff, area public school teachers and band directors, state government employees and other members of the community.
