Women’s Golf, Feng Win SEC Titles
The women’s golf team closed out the 2014 SEC Championship in grand style at the Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., April 20. The Commodores finished 11 strokes ahead of South Carolina to win the team championship, and freshman Simin Feng claimed medalist honors as the tournament’s top individual. Feng shot a tournament-low 66 in the final round to top LSU’s Lindsay Gahm and Arkansas’ Gaby Lopez by eight strokes.
The SEC, one of the nation’s toughest conferences for women’s golf, had eight teams ranked in the top 25 entering the tournament, including Vanderbilt at No. 13. The Commodores posted a three-round total of 879 (298–287–294) to knock off not only the sixth-ranked Gamecocks but also No. 5 Arkansas (by 13 strokes) and No. 8 Alabama (by 17).
The 2014 title is Vanderbilt’s second SEC crown in the program’s history, the first being in 2004. The Commodores also won medalist honors that season, when May Wood, BA’11, was the tournament’s top individual. (Wood left Vanderbilt in 2004, later returning to finish earning her degree.)
