U2 to perform at Vanderbilt Stadium July 2

Legendary rock group U2 will bring their U2 360 tour to Vanderbilt Stadium on Thursday, July 2. Members of the Vanderbilt community can participate in a presale from 10 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28.

Professor Ron Schrimpf receives Chancellor’s Cup

The Chancellor’s Cup is given annually for the greatest recent contribution outside the classroom to undergraduate student-faculty relationships. The faculty member’s contribution must be of educational importance and relevant to the central purpose of the university.

Alumnus Jim Neal has died

Neal was involved in prominent legal cases such as the prosecution of Teamster Union president Jimmy Hoffa for jury tampering and defenses including the Exxon Corp. after the Exxon Valdez Alaskan oil spill, Dr. George Nichopoulos after the death of Elvis Presley and the Ford Motor Company in a dispute over the safety of the Pinto.

Vanderbilt alum makes restitution for 50-year-old theft

Chalk it up to four years of chemistry exams and toiling away in Furman Hall’s labs as to what made then Vanderbilt senior Melvyn Koby lift Francis Furman’s pocket watch in 1960. Koby returned the watch to Furman Oct. 22 while here on a visit for the university’s Reunion.

On-campus swap event Oct. 27 to celebrate launch of new Vandy FreeSwap website

The Sustainability and Environmental Management Office (SEMO), VU Student Communications, and News and Public Affairs are pleased to launch Vandy FreeSwap, a website similar to Craigslist and Freecycle but just for Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff who are giving away (and getting) free, usable, unwanted items to others instead of disposing of them in landfills.

State-of-the-clinics address highlights goals, performance of clinics

The many changes being wrought in the clinics are intended both to put Vanderbilt in position to succeed in a changing environment and to provide a model for health care in the nation.

Brookings scholar lecture marks official opening of new Vanderbilt center

Noted congressional scholar Thomas E. Mann will speak at Vanderbilt University on Oct. 28 about the outlook for the 2010 midterm elections. The public lecture is sponsored by Vanderbilt’s Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.

Students in Vanderbilt Opera Theatre productions get the full-scale stage experience


The mischievously dark worlds of filmmaker Tim Burton, illustrator Edward Gorey and the humorously twisted “Fractured Fairy Tales” cartoons are influencing this fall’s Vanderbilt Opera Theatre production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. It’s quite a change from the traditional, straightforward approach taken when the opera was performed a decade ago, and a change in how opera is integrated into the Blair curriculum.

The Merry Wives of Windsor will be performed on Nov. 12 and Nov. 14. It is free and open to the community.
