Two outstanding women scholars in the same School of Engineering department have been elected president of prestigious national academic societies. Anita Mahadevan-Jansen is president-elect of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and Cynthia Reinhart-King is president-elect of the Biomedical Engineering Society, the professional home for biomedical engineering and bioengineering.

Vanderbilt launches engagement forum for Nashville community leaders
 
Vanderbilt University is convening a new community engagement series to help local agencies and nonprofits navigate complex issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest seen over the past year. The inaugural session is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, and will include a question-and-answer session with Chancellor Daniel Diermeier discussing his academic research on building and maintaining trust in difficult situations.

Applications for new round of internal teaching grants now available
 
The Office of the Provost established two internal funding programs in April 2021, the Educational Advancement Fund and the Course Improvement Grant, designed to support excellence in the classroom through continued pedagogical advancement and long-term educational transformation. The deadline to submit for the upcoming second round of funding is Oct. 15.

The Fall Staff Assembly and staff awards are part of the semiannual effort to celebrate staff excellence and recognize the many contributions of university staff to Vanderbilt’s mission. This year’s Fall Staff Assembly is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 2. Award nominations, which are submitted online, are open through Thursday, Sept. 30.
