Cancer patients who live near Spring Hill, Tennessee, can now receive care from an experienced medical oncologist at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) at Spring Hill instead of traveling to the main campus in Nashville.
Two of VICC’s highly experienced oncologists, Ruth Young, M.D., M.A., MMHC, and Stephen Smith, M.D., are providing care for patients with solid tumors and many blood disorders several days a week at the facility located at 1003 Reserve Blvd.
“We know many patients are traveling long distances to receive their leading-edge cancer care at VICC and we are excited about the opportunity to bring that same high-quality care to the Spring Hill facility, including chemotherapy and access to clinical trials,” said Bart Magowan, BSN, R.N., manager of Patient Care Services.
The new medical oncology and hematology practice is a complement to the radiation oncology practice already available at the Spring Hill clinic. Patients who need radiation therapy for their cancers or metastatic disease can receive that care from experienced radiation oncologists using technologically advanced equipment.
Young and Smith are both seasoned clinicians with expertise in all facets of solid tumor and hematology therapies. Young, associate professor of Clinical Medicine, received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed a residency at Duke Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, and a fellowship at the University of Virginia. She also completed a Master of Health Care Management from the Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management and a Master of Theoretical Mathematics from the University of Minnesota. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. She joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1995.
Smith, assistant professor of Medicine, received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.
He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida, and a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Wake Forest University/Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Smith is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. After 10 years of private practice he joined the faculty of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, where he served as chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Smith joined the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center at Cool Springs in 2009.
