Leaders with Jennie Stuart Medical Center (JSMC) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) announce a strategic affiliation agreement that formalizes a collaborative relationship between the two institutions while JSMC is also joining the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network.

JSMC’s strategic affiliation agreement with VUMC and membership in the network creates significant opportunities for all parties to work together to expand the scope of health care services in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and the surrounding areas served by JSMC.

Through its membership in the network, leaders of JSMC will collaborate with other member institutions to facilitate care coordination, including health and wellness initiatives; establish evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and clinical quality indicators to help drive improvements in outcomes; utilize health information technology and data sharing to achieve the stated goals of the network; help create new models of reimbursement for health care providers, and contract with insurance payors whose employees are assigned to the network for care.

The strategic affiliation agreement between JSMC and VUMC puts into place the ability to form new clinical programs and services to be shared by the two institutions.

“The No. 1 imperative of Jennie Stuart Medical Center’s strategic plan was that Jennie Stuart must continue its work in defining itself as the regional health care resource for the delivery of integrated care in western Kentucky. Our key strategy within this imperative was to pursue a clinical affiliation strategy with a nationally recognized, best-in-class health care system,” said Eric Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer, Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

VHAN is the region’s largest physician-led organization of like-minded health care professionals who are developing solutions to improve health and increase value to patients, providers, employers and other consumers of health care services. With an emphasis on the creation of initiatives that will improve overall health across large populations while reducing per-capita costs for the delivery of health care, the network’s goal is to transform health care delivery across the Mid-South by bringing together clinicians, hospitals, employers, patients and insurance providers in a structure that encourages collaboration to deliver high-quality, cost-efficient care.

“We are excited to formalize new relationships with colleagues at Jennie Stuart Medical Center. I want to welcome them into the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network and express my appreciation to their leaders for also affiliating with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Through the strategic affiliation agreement with VUMC, we look forward to collaborating as our medical centers seek to establish new programs and services that will benefit the patients we serve,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., Deputy Chief Executive Officer for VUMC, CEO of the Vanderbilt Health System and Chairman of the Board for Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network.

“Through the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network we are responding to the many challenges facing health care today that are brought about by the demands of federal and state health care reform and other changes within the industry. We look forward to working with colleagues at Jennie Stuart to create innovative models of care delivery that efficiently and effectively coordinate services and improve health across broad populations.”

While each party remains free to continue to pursue individual initiatives, the strategic affiliation agreement provides the necessary structure for JSMC and VUMC to form collaborative relationships that will create more efficient, cost-effective patient care through new programs and services.

JSMC’s strategic affiliation agreement with VUMC immediately creates a pathway for the two institutions to formally collaborate on a broad range of programs and clinical services including: cardiovascular and cardiology services, cancer services, the development of walk-in clinic services and telemedicine.
